For Founders

Liquidity and legacy should not be opposing goals.

We work with owners who care about what happens after closing: clients, employees, attorneys, reputation, and the firm’s place in the community.

A thoughtful path for the next chapter.

Many founders reach a point where the firm needs more infrastructure, deeper leadership, or a succession plan that protects what they have built. Cypres is designed for those conversations.

We aim to create flexible structures that can support continued founder involvement, gradual transition, or a more immediate step back from administrative burden. Each situation is different, and the right answer should reflect the founder’s goals.

Our language is simple: preserve the best of the firm, professionalize the parts that need support, and invest behind responsible growth.

Ways to Partner

The structure should fit the founder, not the other way around.

A

Growth partnership

Bring in capital and operating support to expand while you continue to lead the firm day to day.

B

Gradual transition

Take liquidity now and step back over a planned period as the next generation of leaders takes on more responsibility.

C

Succession solution

Move toward retirement with a clear plan for clients, attorneys, and staff, and a partner committed to the firm’s future.

Rules of professional conduct restrict non-lawyer ownership of law firms in most states. We work with each firm’s counsel to build structures, such as management services arrangements, that respect those rules and protect attorney independence.

What Founders Ask

Straight answers to the questions that matter most.

Will the firm keep its name?

In most cases, yes. A firm’s name carries decades of trust, and we see no reason to change it. Any change would be something we discuss together, never a surprise.

What happens to my attorneys and staff?

Our goal is stability. We want your team to feel supported, not disrupted, and we build retention and growth opportunities into the plan rather than treating them as an afterthought.

How involved will I stay?

As involved as you want to be. Some founders remain in leadership for years; others prefer a planned handoff. We structure around your preference.

Who sees our conversations?

Only a small group at Cypres. Early discussions are confidential, and we do not contact your clients, staff, or referral sources without your direction.

Is there any obligation in a first conversation?

None. Many of our most useful conversations are early ones, long before a founder is ready to make a decision.

Confidential Conversations

Considering the next chapter for your firm?

A first conversation is private, informal, and carries no obligation.
